Sunset in Ouro Preto
Ouro Preto is located at 1,200 altitude (average altitude, because its relief is very bumpy). It is estimated that mining in Minas Gerais produced a thousand tons of gold during the eighteenth century, with Ouro Preto as capital (formerly called Vila Rica). The watchtower is a detail of the Palace of the Governors erected in the 1740s and that looks like a military fort. In the background, one of the many churches of Ouro Preto, jewels of the Portuguese-Brazilian baroque, next to the mountains that characterize the landscape of the old gold capital.
